“Rampage” is a movie made for 13 year old boys. In five years, they will watch it on TV syndication and laugh at how silly it is. For this weekend, the kids will enjoy themselves. Based on a video game from the early 90’s, “Rampage” is about three giant monsters terrorizing a city. Only The Rock and his ROCK-et launcher can stop them.
Dwayne Johnson plays Davis Okoye, a loner primatologist who’s best friend is named George. George is an over-smart gorilla that Davis has raised since birth. The two have a genuine bond. They share a simplistic form of sign language to communicate. Due to a botched government experiment, George is transformed into a giant ape capable of destroying cities.
George is not alone. Two other animals are transformed. A giant wolf (who can also fly, which giant wolves naturally do) is the first to strike. Then, the ultimate villain, is a mutated alligator that looks like Godzilla if he had to walk on four legs. The three monsters go on a “Rampage” of destruction. Dwayne Johnson must convince his ape George to fight the other beasts and save the city.
“Rampage” is obviously ridiculous. When Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is out acting everyone by a long shot, you probably have a bad cast. The film takes itself way too seriously. Still, it is not offensively bad. Dad’s, this is a good one to take your son. Watch the first ten minutes to understand the “plot”, take a nice nap, and randomly wake up every third explosion. When you walk out of the theater, your son will say “Daddy, daddy wasn’t that so cool?!” As you are still waking up, you can say “oh yeah son, that part where the monkey punches the building was awesome!”
